Yes. The subconscious mind, aka the psyche (aka "the autonomic nervous system"), is in complete control of all bodily processes. It's sole job is to ensure the survival of the individual. The subconscious mind has no concept of "time" nor can it distinguish between literal and figurative thoughts.
As such, the psyche responds to "I don't want to see this...I feel threatened by it....my existence is under attack...etc." by temporarily impairing "sight" to protect the individual from what it perceives as a real and present danger.
