Yes. The area is about half Christian and a fourth Muslim, including the Falani and Boko Haram. Juju is still around and also in the New World, brought by slaves. The quote seems odd to me, 1897 was about when the French took over what used to be Dahoumy and is now Benin, but could be due to differences of borders.
