In 1980 I was in 5th grade. The school announced that it was going to get rid of its magazine collection and that after school kids could stop by the school library and pick up whatever magazines they wanted and take them home. I remember when the bell rang... I shot out of my desk and was the first through the door, and since I was the fastest kid in my school, I made it to the library first.
And sure enough, there in the pile of magazines was that year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue with Cheryl Tiegs wearing a see-through fishnet one-piece bathing suit. Mine. Allllllllll mine.
By the time the others caught up, they saw it in my hands and they were dismayed. But then something happened... I had this thought... "I don't need this, otherwise I'll be stuck to it." And so I threw it on the table and left while 10 other boys fought for it.
Thank you, God, for that moment where you gave me wisdom at such a young age... wisdom for which I'm sure I was not worthy.
I don't know why I felt like I needed to share that... but... oh, well. Thanks be to God.
That was a surprisingly mature and healthy understanding (and action), u/changeagent -- I doubt I would have come to the realization you did at that age.
I believe that God's voice in our lives is the truth of our real selves.
Those open to hearing that voice have the moral compass that helps protect us from foolish or evil choices. I've never been one to believe in the (external) power of prayer, but I do believe this: prayer gives us practice in listening for and to the voice of God, which means listening to our real, healthy selves. We are beings made IN the image of God, after all. That doesn't mean we LOOK like Him, but rather that our souls are in harmony with His.
I've been trying to improve that harmony my whole life. I suspect you were way ahead of me, and of most people for that matter.
Thanks for the comment. I know I am not ahead of others... just a bit more in tune with my inner voice, maybe--but I don't always listento it! I agree with what you explained, though.
What an awesome testimony! A proverb that was literally the living word that obviously manifested throughout your life ! Unbelievable, just unbelievable, there is no telling the level of horror that you were spared by the choice that you made to heed temptation at such a young age! This is no judgement to anyone who struggles with pornography, some are able to dabble and it does not control them , but some find their lives consumed and destroyed by it ! I believe you may have found yourself in the latter! This childhood memory reads like I’m watching the beginning of a great movie, based on a true story lol ! Very powerful , thanks for sharing!
I appreciate the sentiment. Thank you.
