Ukraine has been preparing for this since Russia annexed the Crimea in 2014. Since then they have been training and overhauling their military (with support from NATO). In contrast, Russia has only had some low intensity conflicts in the last couple decades and I don't think it has given them much experience on fighting a more determined enemy.
