Go on a search engine and search “when did the government subsidize electric?” Every topic of the subsidy will show up other than its origins! Once they centralized electric, they regulated the hell out of it and made it a no-compete business. Power companies are monopolies because of it. The regulations virtually stopped all entrepreneurs from continuing their tests and explorations on electric because it was illegal. The the red tidal wave is about to hit land and when it does, our children and grand children will have limitless opportunities!

It was foreshadowed by the board game monopoly. Around that time, when the game was marketed by Parker Brothers, municipalities and private railroads were getting into municipal electric rail, and electricity competed against steam/coal and oil. What're the only properties that can't be leveraged for better income? The utilities and railroads.
Shortly after PB acquired the game, and right before FDR began his first term, the public utilities holding company act of 1935 was passed, monopolizing electricity and removing the rail companies' best growth market (municipal electric rail) leading to rail consolidation. Electricity became uncompetitive and big oil reigned supreme, even until today.
What’s also interesting to note, is that when they went gang busters on standard oil and broke them up due to such control from one company. Standard oil essentially became more powerful realizing the worth of the parts individually were worth more than the whole.
The irony is that Monopoly was made to show people how evil capitalism and corporate greed is. That didn't work at all did it?
