Kinda swings both ways, an idea or concept that is already familiar to the brain is easier to accept/believe than one that is completely foreign to it....

Both sides can play that game, one does because of narcissism and self-service affirming religious doctrine, and one does it to put notions and ideas out in the public psyche.

If the first group had any sense they wouldn't, but they do and whatever they tell themselves the advantage is firmly in the good guy corner...
