I had a cousin tell me about 50 years ago, "Doctors don't know how to cure a single disease", and to this day, I haven't seen where he was wrong. They know how to prescribe all sorts of treatments and drugs, but other than infections and broken bones, they can't cure anything.
I used to work with an orthopedic surgeon who said he didn't cure anything. The body cured itself. The surgeon just cleaned the junk out of the way. He was a former Air Force trauma surgeon and a profoundly good man. It is certain to me that his skill made the difference for thousands of patients, but this humble statement (and a few others) stuck with me.
