Murder and Rape and Stealing and Slavery all should be and in fact Are states Issues and Responsibilities, that is why States can have the Death Penalty, and by Rights should have it, and be very active in it....
None of that should be Dictated to the States by the Federation, just like Abortion, which is direct Murder, Slavery too should've been left to the States....
After all, they were Enslaving their Fellow State Citizens, and That IS unlawful....
So there was some sort of Convention, where the Southern States, even though they were the Minority, why were going to FORCE all the other States into Making some Law that made Slavery Legal Forever???
I really would've loved to be a Fly in that chamber, States Rights and all....
It's not about being minority, its about who becomes the president. If Lincoln lost and the south Democrat candidate won, we would have states forced to legalize slavery. I'm sure you wouldn't be complaining about states right then would you.
the fact is that the Southern Democrats got greedy, and ran on a new platform, to force states into slavery. Instead of having a single Democrat candidate they fractured the power of the democrat vote by having their own. Spitting the candidates, split the party vote, weakening it which lead to lincolns win.
in the end, the south was not about states rights purely as principle but cared about states rights strictly because they feared a loss which they did and feared that slavery was going away. If they won they would not have left the union. But it goes further and this is the crux of your argument. If they had won, they were going to do the exact thing you claim they were against. They were going to make slavery a federal issue and force states to adopt it.
None of what I said was state issues... you are trying but failing

As stated. The convention disproves your argument. The south wanted to force all states to accept slavery.
