I think the conflation comes from associating Catholicism with the right wing cause Jesus or something. It's wrong, but at the same time, the Catholic church goes above and beyond to cover up pedo crimes. Pedophilia is also a problem in other churches and I have argued with fundamentalists who try to deflect the crimes more often than owning them because they think their "side" needs to save face even though there are no sides...
