Australia has a consumption tax, called the Goods and Services tax. Recently, the Aus govt passed legislation so that companies selling to Aussies from offshore still have to charge and collect this.
So I think that govts will always come up with ways to get around not getting their tax.
So if you earn income in the US and buy all your stuff outside of the US, you actually do pretty well.
This incentivizes moving cash overseas (hollowing out of America).
