Got me wondering about the "medical group" my insurance uses. If they checked me out then everyone knows -- by primary doctor, the orthopedic surgeon (kneesles and arthritic finger joints), the allergist, the eye doctor . . . I've never had the sense that any one knew, but (for lack of a better term) who knows?

One would think so. But I'll bet if one dug deep enough, there is likely waivers / loop holes when it comes to sharing your info "with the government". That's different than giving to a common criminal. The criminal will just try to steal your money, not your life.

I was also wondering about "Emergency Powers." There's a lot of sneaky stuff in those rules. Edit: I'm an RN and former inpatient psych nurse. One day I found out that if a patient makes a threat against the President of the United States, the MD must report it to the FBI, who will arrive within the hour. No HIPAA protection in that case.

My dad dropped his years ago at 63 with a complete checkup and clean bill of health. Diagnosed with cancer and died before 65. Never be without insurance. He shelled out over $30,000 in negotiated fees before getting MDAnderson to pay for his indigent care.
I was quoted $1,500/mo premium with a $20,000 deductible, and I’m healthy and take no meds. Never be without insurance is easy to say if the price isn’t astronomical.

Assuming you have a relatively clean health history you can always just get new doctors who you lie to about your identity. It's not really meaningful personal health information when they're wrong about the person it applies to. This will mean you can't really use insurance anymore, but if you're just using a walk in clinic to get some antibiotics you can go out of pocket easily enough.
Hubby went to ER die to accident in another state. Different hospital system entirely. They knew every medicine he took immediately.
If you give them your real name or Social Security number they can do that rather easily. If you don't they'd have to suspect you were lying about the name you used at which point they could run your fingerprints or DNA to figure out who you were, assume you let them take blood.
