I am currently reading the Old Testament. When Joshua came to to take the lands for God's People, God did not like the Canaanites for they were evil to the Lord and He wanted them to be permanently removed from the earth.
The Canaanites worshipped Baal, sacrificed their children to him and brought other gods instead of worshipping God the Father. He wanted the Jewish people to wipe them all out. (men, women, and children) But the Jewish people did not do so in all their land. Thus, they did not do what God had commanded them to do.
By not killing all the Cannaittes when the Jews initially colonized Israel with their 12 tribes, they condemned themselves in their future.. they were forbidden by their Jewish priests to marry the Canaanites but they still did it (including some of their Kings) and then many of the Jews took up the idol worship. God allowed them the Jews to be destroyed enumerous times for taking up idols.
