Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was ridiculed after she called on Japan to be more accepting and embracing of members of the LGBTQ community. The New York Democrat met with Japanese government leaders while taking a congressional visit to Asia.

In an Instagram live stream, the far-Left Democrat complained about how a Japanese government official made discriminatory comments about LGBTQ individuals, weeks before her visit. “There was a member of the Japanese administration that was caught in off-the-record comments making very discriminatory statements about LGBT people,” AOC said, Fox News reported.

“It is quite shocking, I think it’s fair to characterize this as [a] pretty shocking development,” she added before claiming the United States’ relationship with Japan would be strengthened if they were more supportive of woke social issues. “It is our view that marriage equality and LGBT protections being enacted in Japan would [play] a very strong and important role in U.S. and Japan relations.”

The Japan Times reported weeks ago that Masayoshi Arai, a now-former Japanese government aide, told reporters he would prefer not to live next to homosexual couples. Arai said “there are quite a few people who would abandon this country” should same-sex unions ever be legalized in Japan.

Arai swiftly retracted and apologized for his comments that same day before being fired by Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

AOC was lambasted on social media for attempting to meddle in other countries’ cultures. “AOC is currently in Japan demanding that their government embrace LGBTQ alphabet wokeness, or else,” Ian Miles Cheong, a rightwing political commentator said on Twitter.

Yoko Ishii, a Japanese political commentator, also slammed AOC for her comments. “Japan isn’t America. LGBTQ people aren’t discriminated like you imagine. Our culture has been very tolerant since the ancient times. Plus, our constitution only allows marriage between 2 genders. Forced change can cause crimes, too. Who is AOC to us Japanese anyway? Like wtf,” Ishii commented on Twitter.

American journalist Sameera Khan made similar comments. “Japan’s internal affairs are none of AOC’s business,” Khan tweeted.
