1 Corinthians 3:12-13
King James Version
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
What does this mean?
The main point of this passage is in 3:10 “each one should take care how he builds upon it.”
Many commentators note how the beginning of 1 Corinthians compares worldly wisdom and Godly wisdom. Whether we are building up the Christian life of ourselves or of someone else, we should heed the warning to take care how we build. The foundation is Christ and the subsequent work of building should be done with Christ and with things of permanence—Godly wisdom and instruction. Someone having a foundation of Christ then building on it with worldly wisdom is adding things that won’t last.
