I believe it's for the next election. They are attempting to split the MAGA movement by jumping behind DeSantis, who has enough MAGA appeal to maybe shave enough off Trump's support. Kari Lake is another major MAGA force who is steadfastly behind Trump. She can hold those in that they are attempting to shave off with DeSantis.
