If your name is David, and you prefer being called Dave, or Bob, or even Alice... I'll call you whatever you prefer. Because I'm not an asshole. Only an asshole would purposely use a name/nickname someone doesn't like.
In the same way, I'll even try to use your 'preferred pronoun' even though I think it's stupid. I may think that calling you Dave instead of David is stupid - especially if I've called you David for the entire time I've known you. But, I'll still try, because I'm not an asshole.
All I ask in return, is that when I fuck it up (because I will, though not intentionally) that you don't become an asshole. That you realize you are outside the norm. I won't be an asshole. You won't be an asshole. We'll get along fine.
But if you get pissed because I accidentally use the wrong pronoun, or the wrong nickname, all bets are off.
If a grown man believes he's a woman and lists his "she/her" pronouns in his email signature, it's not hurting me directly.
I don't have a problem with Dave or Bob asking me to call him Alice.
I do have a problem with Alice forcing my HR department to implement a training program that asks me to change my behaviors in order to cultivate a work environment conducive to the transition process.
I do have a problem being told my refusal to list my pronouns in my email signature is a micro-aggression.
I do have a problem being told it's my duty to show sensitivity, provide emotional support, and act in ways that affirm Alice's gender identity.
Yeah but when people try to use other pronouns and expect you to use them in return, it is hurting you. It's hurting you by further weakening truth. It weakens what we know to be reality.
If a grown man said he was a cat, would you oblige him and meow back?
It seems to me, that when people are insane, it serves them no benefit to oblige them in their madness. Because by doing so, it further entrenches them in their confused thought patterns. And likewise, by entering their world of insanity by playing along so to speak, it can gradually start to blur the lines of what society accepts as reality.
First it starts as putting your pronouns in an email signature...and then you have men in women's prisons.
I'm... Into not being an asshole to people.

In conclusion, fuck Dave.

Never said I'd call him Alice, and I thought my conclusion spelled out my thoughts on the matter, but you're exactly right.
