When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty.
When they separated church and state...meaning you could NOT express your faith and trust in a Sovereign God and use that as a guiding principal...was the beginning of the downfall of America. The founding fathers all acknowledged God and the Bible as the basis for all moral code which dictates laws...
This truthfully is one of the problems I have with America being a "melting pot"...in our quest for diversity and acceptance we have allowed the erosion of Godly precept and principal...and that NEVER ends well for a country...that is why there is a systematic push to remove God totally from every area of government and society. God can only exist in church and not in the public arena...which is totally opposite of how we are called to live as Christians...
This explains some history about our First Amendment, where some argued for separation of church and state (though those words were not there in the text).
