Strictly speaking. They weren’t objecting to taxation. They were objecting to the fact they had no say in how high their taxes were.
Ergo “No Taxation without Representation”.
The “Taxation is theft” thing is a libertarian meme only a decade or two old.
Yup. It's a gross misunderstanding of how governments work. When libertarians say taxation is theft, they're essentially arguing for anarchy. And while I understand the idea of limited government and a large shift of power and decision-making to the people broadly, we still need a military, a police force, diplomats to conduct international relations, etc.
I would add one component though. We greatly simplify citizenship such that it's taken for granted. I think citizenship needs to be opt-in for those of us entitled to it by law. I should have a point in my life where I am offered a clear choice to accept the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, or if I will start the process towards emigrating to another country and becoming one of their citizens. At age 18 when I hit legal majority, I should have to pass a citizenship exam just like a legal immigrant to show I understand the way of life I'm going to choose or reject, and then I should be given the choice to opt in. By making this an affirmative choice, we get rid of the idea that we're simply born into a system of slavery to government, which is what a lot of these radical elements of our society so frequently argue. It would also set up a framework to encourage the malcontents and the radical subversives to leave.
The percentage of taxation the Colonists rebelled against is a FRACTION of what Americans are currently paying.
and yes.. IT IS THEFT
We have no representation in our government anymore. It's all taxation without representation aka theft now.
