Willing to at least try to reduce the amount of fluoride ingested in my local area, as well as setting up more counter-measures in case there are disruptions in water treatment and supply. What are your opinion on those clay and soapstone filters, and the ones that aim to kill germs with UV-light exposure ?

The way I understand this, the UV only takes out living things like bacteria, not chlorine or fluorine or pharmaceuticals or particulate things. Even RO water has junk in it. I use a distiller. You'd be amazed to see what gets left behind in "purified," filtered," and RO systems. Once you see it, you'll never go back.
Don't you lose out on beneficial trace minerals by using distilled water?
That's the FALSE claim that was made by a water bottling company eons ago. One breath of air and you've taken in all the minerals that could be in water. If you want minerals, take a supplement. The chemicals and absolute CRAP that's in water (any water other than distilled) outweighs any benefits from minerals. All that CRAP has to be taken out by your kidneys. Way healthier to drink distilled water. I've been drinking distilled water for over 40 years, and I am over 70 and taking NO medications at all. I'm way healthier than most people. You want proof, it's ME! You want diseases, drink tap/RO water; it's a slow killer.
Thanks for the answer. It was something I've never questioned. I've always liked well water and river water, for the taste (depends on the source quality, obviously), and assumed I was getting random benefits from trace minerals. Thanks.
I will tell you this politely. Water should NOT have a taste. NONE. You're tasting the "stuff in the water." Water should not have a taste. Also, you'll find that when you drink "clean" (distilled water) you'll find you actually get thirsty because you're hydrating your body without a buildup of all that crap in the water. Water will remove bad stuff from your body. If you want "alkaline" water, you can add a small amount (pinch) of baking soda. Some people add salt, but the American diet has SO MUCH salt in it, it's completely unnecessary. There are other "salts" (chemical term) that may be beneficial. I DO add some iodine.
Add some un-rifined salt like Redmond's into some distilled water every day. Over 80 different minerals in it and it's a good electrolyte. You do get a lot of the minerals needed from food though so plain distilled water doesn't scare me. Only issue with distilled water for me would be if the power goes out for a long period of time.
I am NOT familiar with this. I will research it. Thank you for the information. As to losing power, I'm good for a few days with my rotating supply. (wink wink)
