This means that there are doors for the chickens to go outside if/when they want to. But the reality is that very few go out. They stay inside where they are constantly packed in, next to other chickens, and they appear to be perfectly happy with that. A stressed hen will not lay eggs.
I also have a cousin who is a milk producer. They bend over backwards to make sure that these cows are comfortable at all times. A stressed cow will produce less milk.
