During what is called the winter Storm or the Century (20th) we were without power for around 5 days. We had a big old fireplace with plenty of wood, all the candles we needed. First couple of days I thought how nice it was having to rough it. No television, no hot water, living like I imagined in the old days. But after those couple of days it sucked, and we were all ready for the power to come back on, we'd had enough of that life.
And I think about my mom telling me that when she was young, they did not have electricity, or any indoor plumbing at all. To them that was normal life.
I had a co-worker in Dallas who went through that storm a couple of years ago. Said it was 40 degrees in his house. They basically sat around the fire pit with all their clothes on like they were at a ski lodge. Another co-worker said she had a broken her toe and was wearing one of those velcro sandals while it healed. She had one really cold foot.
