I've heard a different story about the tunnels and NY. There is a group of Jews who think a rabbi who died in 1998 is the Messiah. They were excommunicated for these beliefs and they dug the tunnels to be surreptitiously behind the walls in the area where this guy used to live and preach. They would pray while in there. Just passing along what I've heard.
