It's kinda funny, i'm from Mississippi and the way they spelled it is the way people in Mississippi pronounce it. (for ease)

In Balmer (big ships, no bridges) Maryland, there is the Patapsco River. Locals pronounce it with an extra 'i', Pataps-i-co. They balance you out. Kek
