There has recently been a drive to eliminate the overwhelming fact that there are a majority of older white males in the construction industry in New Zealand (at least 10% of the national work-force). This has appeared through ministerial statements addressing a skills shortage, whereby the ideology is that more waamen and brown-skinned people should work in the industry.
Oh bears of little brain - waamen do work in the industry, but not as licensed builders - more in an admin role, and even then, employing them is ephemeral, as they tend to get pregnant, yet the work needs to continue. I am not just talking out of my arse here - I have seen it happen many times. In any case - the classes for Construction Management are 2% waamen at most, and people in this country still choose their tertiary studies - so waamen CHOOSE not to work in the industry. Really that sex are more interested in peripheral industries, such as Real Estate or Interior Decorating - and more power to them. There are Ents and then there are Ent wives. Both are needed, but not necessarily in the same roles.
I did a thesis a few years ago whereby I surveyed a list of licensed builders, and most of the names were either Scottish or Irish (really), with the occasional Dutch name (Mostly South African). There was a sprinkling of Chinese and Indian names, but that's it. Out of roughly a thousand builders there were just one handful of Maori names (i.e. less than five, mind you many Maori carry Scottish names, so there is that). But, in my opinion, this is an organic statistic, not one that can be tweaked with social engineering.
