Most Legionaires don't have wives or children. Maybe the officers do, as they're all French born citizens, but if I remember correctly, to be a member of the Foreign Legion, you can't be married. It is illegal for any Legionnaire to enter domestic French soil, too.
The troops are not French. But if they serve well enough they can apply for and receive citizenship.
Would be good for all of the migrants that flooded Europe over the past few years be required to serve 4 years if they wish to remain. Else, float them back home.

They get that on retirement.... I believe 12 or 15 years.
