I worked part-time at ANC for 5 years while I was stationed at the Pentagon in the 90s. I did a lot of different things - escort dignitaries, direct traffic on major holidays, keep the Kennedy site safe and "sane", and man the chains and keep things respectful at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Great part time job - got to meet all the Kennedys, a couple of presidents, and a ton of world leaders. While there I worked over 100 wreath-laying ceremonies including the big Presidential ones on Memorial and Veterans days. I wasn't a Tomb Guard (I was USAF) - I just opened and closed the chains to let the guards in for changing of the guard, and other ceremonies, and kept things respectful so the Tomb Guards didn't have to call people out (there are some fun videos on youtube on that).
Before this morning I've never seen a back-to-back-to-back ceremony like today's. Specifically with one main person. I've seen a few in a row but they were usually groups like the Daughters of the American Revolution, Medal of Honor Society, and Boy Scouts. Today Trump did the ceremony for all 13 killed in the Afghanistan airport bombing, then 2 individual ceremonies for the families of 2 of the 13. That was truly special.
I wish I could have been there for this. Arlington is a stop I'm going to make again shortly. I've soured some on DC since the "wild" day of the past.. I'd like to go over to the DC Gulag as well. Thank you for the insight.
Yep- I watched it this morning. He placed 3 wreaths with soldiers family members
