About 15 years ago when I still lived in America, I met a guy at a company I worked briefly at who was from South Africa. He said that after apartheid fell, the once beautiful beaches became strewn with trash everywhere, carjackings proliferated, and it became extremely dangerous. I told him that my uncle had visited there in the '80s and I saw his photographs of how beautiful it was. He said that such beauty became obsolete and he was glad to have moved to America.
