If you're not handy you might want to just offer to pay for the fix; you could end up making it worse. If they are a real friend, they'll be more concerned that you fell down the stairs and hope you didn't injure yourself. Just my take.
There is no quick fix the putty takes hours to dry and it has to be put on right and smoothed out so it looks like part of the wall. Then you have to paint and even though the wall is white you have to have exactly the right color to blend in. There are a ton of white colors and they are all different.
Just tell your friend you had an accident and you will help repair it.
woah dude yes you have a problem. you need to cut a peice out put in a repair panel then mud it in. and to do it right will take 3 coats........either that or a hell of a lot of joint paste and it will never dry in time if your friend is coming home tonight......think you need to tell him gremlins were trying to steal his dog and you valiently fought them off but unfortunately damaged the wall with the gremlins head..................sounds good to me
Yeah, buy a big ass gallon bucket of dry wall putty, a spreading knife, and then you'll need to paint over it once it dries. Or, buy a piece of drywall, cut it to size then putty it up and then paint. Couple of options, but it will take two separate fixes because of dry time.
You can get the putty work done by the night, but you'd need to paint tomorrow.
rule of thumbs the less you try to hide things the less angry some one is over it....if you can get a hold of them let them know what happened... let them decide how to handle it...
Given the depth of the hole, dry wall compound filler would take several days to dry. It will need Mutiple coats of mud , then sanding and then need to be primed and painted.
You will need a piece of wall board, a wall board saw, 2×4 to fit between studs, wall board screws, 3 inch screws to attach 2×4 to existing studs, joint compound, self sticking mesh joint tape, 4 inch and 12 inch putty knives (may be called something else. I call them that). You will have to remove that piece of molding. You will need a small crow bar to carefully remove it and finishing nails to attach it after patch is finished. Sandpaper. And paint.
It's relatively easy if you have done it before and have the tools. You don't have a good timeline. Must use at least two layers of compound and must wait for each to dry before proceeding.
In other words, call someone who can do the job, or just get ready to tell the owners what happened. I honestly don't see them being concerned about anything but HOW YOU ARE DOING. They might have a slight thought that your health could mean bare stair treads are their responsibility whether you are doing them a favor or are an employee.
Go buy a 20-minute compound. Start spreading it in, dry, spread more, dry, spread more, etc... For real, though, that hole needs a properly supported patch. You could quickly cut a patch in and use 20-minute mud with mesh tape. 20-minute stuff gives you time to do it quickly. It really needs a proper fix, though. Any quick measure will probably crack o ver time.
Don't feel bad, I tumbled down my stairs and my head went right through drywall at the bottom like yours. If there had been a stud there, I'd have broken my neck. I hit so hard I can't believe it didn't come out the other side.
Even if you know how to drywall & mud and tape and prime and paint, working on someone's house without permission is bad news.
@Stray502 has the best advice. Fess up and offer to fix.
A lot of people would be more pissed if you tried to fix it up before they got home, it is deception. On top of that a rush job could easily make it worse.

Just fess up. Mistakes happen and offer to pay for the repair.
Lowes sells 2'x2' drywall patches and quick set joint compound.
😬😬
Quick set with hot water and hair dryer to speed up drying time.
But you would still need to paint the wall after the patch is super dry... ask me how I know...
Yes of course, spray paint white will match easy.
oh shoot.. maybe hang a real nice framed picture of Pepe to cover it up.Kek

Best response yet.

Geez you musta really smacked that wall pretty hard, it’s a wonder you aren’t severely injured. But honey you’re really gonna feel it tomorrow.
Just get out your checkbook, seriously that’s a hard fix for an amateur. God bless you so happy you’re ok
Hope you are OK fren.
If this isn't the best proof of how important this Board and the Frens have become in all of our lives, I don't know what is.
Hope you are okay.
Kek! Sorry to laugh, heh... ya ok?

Why are you riding your motorcycle in the house?

Maybe he should have had treads on his stairs. You were a guest. He is fortunate that you were not seriously injured.
Be a democrat, blame it on the dog.
Fren, if you can tell me when you have enough replies, then I can take this post off the front pages but you will still be able to access it.

This is not happening by tonight.
Just stick a trump poster in front of it. They will never notice.
On a serious note I have no idea how to fix it. Sorry to hear you fell. I would just be honest with them. Praying for you fren. Much love
For this to look nice when complete it takes patience and a little skill.
Hire a handyman with drywall experience.
Tell your friend the good news / bad news. Good -- you didn't break any bones ------Bad -- you fucked up the wall.
Tell him the Russians did it? Lol
You could blame it on the dog, however the dog will never respect you again.

tell him you're not going sue
Tell him you had Gorilla Channel on and shit got crazy. Any reasonable person would understand. If he doesn't, kick the hole clean.
Just get a mirror big enough and glue it to that spot. They probably won't notice.

Hahaha, place post it note saying dog is ok after tumbling down stair. Say, why were you upstairs. You should stay on 1st floor?
It's only drywall. Don't sweat the small stuff> You're ok. Dog is ok. Move on.
Imagine if he was just casually scrolling through here and saw your post 😆
The dog tripped me.
It is a really easy fix for a DIYer familiar with drywall and taping:
There are YouTube videos on how to fix it.. it’s not too difficult and the wall is white..
