That whole stripping of the ego soul crushing churning of government product through boot camp..I get what it is supposed to do. Indoctrinate. Remove the personal drive. Turn the recruit into easily controlled and used weaponry.
but I am an extremely high IQ autist with more skills and knowledge than the average recruit. I am also 200% more patriotic than most people. I'd have spent the past twenty years serving my country had I been allowed my hair.

I never would have gone for infantry. My ASVAB was too damn high for that. I would have gladly worked cyber or logistics on base or hiding in a sub and made sure the men on the front had the support they need
But I chose my hair..not just my hair, but my God given right of being able to be whoever I want to be. I also got to meet my wife and chill and be cozy with her. Coincidentally her type all her life was guys with long hair. You have pretty hair was the first thing she told me and we've been married over thirteen years.

But the real reason why longer hair was advantageous in ancient warfare was the extra protection it provided the head when a helmet and cloth were worn.
Also longer hair provided protection from the sun for long marches for the neck and shoulders.
