"I get off work at midnight, and I sometimes see 10 people like that waiting for their cards to load"
...I want to be compassionate and believe that people are generally being helped, but the legitimate is so overshadowed by the illegitimate money grabbing...
Each one of these assistance programs are SUPPOSED to be a hand up, not a hand out. I'm all out of compassion. I know there are people who have fallen on hard times and are trying to work their way back to being self sufficient, but even without these programs, someone of that mindset will eventually succeed. Our federal government needs to get out of the damn charity business and leave that to actual charitable organizations and churches.
I volunteer at a food bank and it is amazing how many donations and offers to help came in from the public due to the cutoff of SNAP benefits. We have a caring society. And it kept our few paid employees working long hours just to respond to it all.
Don't lose sight of the fact that it's the big box chain stores who are benefitting from this system. We could feed the hungry without feeding the retailers' till.
Then why don't you guys get together and figure out why the hell the cost of food is so high and brainstorm a solution for it so that we can all go grocery shopping without needing to rely on government assistance? Because taking a shit on poor people isn't the answer here
We have to work three times as hard as our parents and grandparents did for about half of their slice of the pie. That's the problem that needs to be addressed here. If that wasn't the case we wouldn't have 40 million people on food stamps.
I feel the same way. EBT card holders have hundreds of dollars of groceries---mostly junk food and fast food like hot pockets and pizza----and I have my little basket worth 100 bucks of potatoes, hamburger meat, cabbage, vegetables, rice, butter and milk to last me a week.

Same. I get so pissed when I go to the grocery store. That adventure is on the list for today too. Not looking forward to it.
Cabbage, bananas, potatoes, rice and beans. I remember those days. My body still responds with nostalgic joy when I eat beans and rice.
Maybe a lot of those SNAP users have swing shift jobs.
