I've been to northern sweden to visit family. I don't remember the bugs as being bad,but I was born and raised in the UP of Michigan. It seamed normal.
I remember one summer at my buddies cabin, North East of Kuopio. I got bitten to hell. All the kids there played a game circling and numbering the bites.
It was hundreds. We never laughed so much. The beer helped.
Everywhere I went for a few days I got strange looks and laughs. Humour cures all pain.
One of my favourite, most prized possessions is a t-shirt those kids gave me. The Finnish Air Force, with pictures of mosquitoes on it 🤣.
My brother go's back to Michigan every year from Denver. His kids are born and raised their. When they get a mosquito bite they have a welt for several days. When I get bit I barely notice it,and cant even see it an hour later. Your body gets used to them.....
The mosquito infested area and those horrible Parma flies that bite chunks out of you. Why would people see this as a bad thing?
I would if I was Russian.....
You need to go fishing there once, only once. Those flies are unreal. I was like a delicacy, rare Irish meat.

1984 you say????
Nothing to do with the book you're thinking of but yes.
A punishment or a blessing? That probably depends on who you ask. Some would see it as a curse, while others would consider it a gift.
