It seems that the UK government is at war with ordinary UK citizens doesn't it?
This, should finally put to rest the Sanctions theory. They were able to hobble small countries that way, but even then, Cuba has been under sanctions since Kennedy's era, and they are still standing, albeit angrily.
Iran (since 1979) has bounced back. Recent Syrian sanctions are pretty visible as inhumane, after the Turkish border earthquakes. We could donate to Turkish Aid organizations, but not Syrian ones. Furthermore, no-one wants to talk about the Venezuela sanctions that were imposed on their population, for voting for what the US deemed to be the 'wrong' person, either. The USA stole Venezuelan Gold (A greater form of sanction, which is theft of assets) and they reduced the entire population to debilitating hunger.
The problem, as is demonstrated from the Cuba example, is that sanctions are almost impossible to walk back. I am wondering if this latest round of Russia hatred, and their complete shrug in response, will finally lead some enlightened US president to just cancel ALL sanctions.

It is impossible to sanction a nuclear superpower. They have friends.

Sanctions hurt ordinary people, and consequently backfire. The theory that the 'people will rise up against their government' behind the sanctions theory is completely bankrupt. The people will stand by the leaders they trust. They won't switch sides because they are hungry. The mechanisms are not correlated.
