They lied about Mad Cow Disease.

It was caused by toxins -- as most illnesses are.

The UK tanning/leather industry lobbied (i.e. bribed) the UK government to pass a law requiring farmers to use a toxic cleaner on cows. This was because there was a small insect that was biting the cows and causing marks to the hides, which the tanning/leather industry did not like.

The toxin kept the insects away, but it was also a neurotoxin.

It seeped into the cow's bloodstream, which caused damange to the nervous system, which caused the cows to lose control of their muscles, giving the appearance that they had "gone mad."

Once it was figured out that this toxin was the cause, the farmers stopped putting it on the cows and the problem went away.
