I will say this. In 4-H animal projects, antibiotics were allowed specific to the animal itself (i.e. not put in the food or administered to the rest), and ethics were enforced, that the animal could NOT be sold for food!!!, unless the proper withdrawal period had passed. Records for each animal had to include medicines administered to that animal.
So you get sick, you take antibiotics. You return to full and complete health. Your body is healthy again. There is no longer any disease in your system. The time frame has passed when the antibiotics are no longer in your system. We still won't eat you! But the animal should be OK . . .
Should the 4-H kid or farmer, just kill rather than sell, a healthy animal that he has ethically hand-raised just b/c it was once sick??
Caveat Emptor however.
PS Backyard chickens are now popular. You can raise your own chickens! If you do not want to buy Amish or 4-H chickens. You just have to protect them while they are free ranging or in their cages, from foxes, raccoons, owls, etc., and all the diseases fowl are prone to. Good Luck! Everyone loves eggs from free range chickens, and the meat of free range organic chickens! Let me know how you do . . . if you are willing to spend the money for pasture enough for free ranging, and the cooping necessary for overnight, and for the feed and any vet care they may require!
