Grain Mills, Lumberyards, setting up places for tradesmen, deterring bandits and highwaymen. Were all things societal aristocrats at least in Europe were expected to do.

Somewhat ironically. In our quest for greater freedoms and liberties for all. We steadily threw out most of these codes along with the systems they directly or indirectly supported. And decided to rely exclusively on people’s better natures to keep peoples baser impulses in Check.

And then almost immediately set about creating the Modern Corporate System. In which you are statistically more likely to meet wild financial success. If you display sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies and traits. Granted it isn’t impossible for a moral and sane person to achieve such heights either. Just far, far harder.

In short. Western Society kept the Wealthy Aristocracy whether they go around calling themselves Lords or not. And removed any expectation or obligation that they should even pretend to care for anyone or invest in anything that ultimately doesn’t benefit them. And simultaneously created a system as a cornerstone of the modern economy that is statistically more likely to produce psychopathic Billionaires as new members of the Aristocratic class. Rather than sane and well adjusted people.

And then we stand around wondering were we went wrong and how so many Rich People ended up as perverted Devil worshipping Lunatics with delusions of grandeur. That bribe or kill anyone not on board with them.
