I respectfully disagree with this viewpoint. I wasn't any kind of religious or spiritual man myself until a little less than a decade ago. I was your standard materialist on auto-pilot until I took an honest account of the occult and began a deep and ongoing study of its teachings and history. There is so much more going on around us than we can even begin to fathom. And this realm of ours called Earth is truly a spiritual warzone, with these being especially tumultuous times.

I believe every person is born with agency and free will, but there are more ways than death that the light can fade out of the physical body. I'm not here to say this person is possessed or that person is brainwashed, but it doesn't take a PhD nor an exorcist to know when "nobody is home". The mass conditioning / programming of TV and social media alone have placed a large group of people into a never-ending state of auto-pilot. And that's not even to mention the shaping of youth from a younger and younger age into a state of perpetual obedience while actively eliminating their potential for critical thought.

Having said all that, I'm not sure why you suggest "it ultimately removes them from the realm of human notions of agency and susceptibility to the sword of justice." Frankly, in times of war it doesn't fucking matter if you claim to have only been "following orders". Down here in the 3rd dimension it is society's utmost duty to hold any and everyone accountable for their damaging actions against others. And if a higher power does indeed exist, I guess they can try the insanity plea with him.
