This is the way. If it is necessary to protect the community with a list of legal gun owners, that list should be encrypted and in the possession of only the local sheriff. It's his business and his business alone, not the feds. Local security should be local, not controlled by Washington DC.
Of course it would be better that the sheriff concern himself only with illegal gun owners, but that list should also have robust protection.
Best yet would be if the sheriff focuses exclusively on gun owners, legal or illegal, that failed to contribute to the "security of a free state." (The ignored part of that amendment.) The gang bangers, or that perpetually drunk and angry neighbor, or the kid down the street on SSRIs who is known to torture and kill the neighbor's cats, that's where the sheriff should be focusing.
