Showing up at those meetings is the best bang for the buck for your political time. There's no need to write big checks or volunteer every waking minute--just absorb info and identify the good and bad actors in your region.
There is so much corruption and at the same time some of America's best are working at the committee level to make things right.
All the local scuttlebutt and action is at the committee level. I regularly hear about issues there before they reach awareness on places like X (e.g. the illegal immigrant truckers).

So these folks will go in knowing they're going to get side effects, and have experienced side effects so frequently and predictably that they have a game plan to help minimize it.
