Internet shuts down then EVERYTHING, including gas stations, banks, grocery stores - all shut down. Debit and credit card authorizations all run on the Internet. Unless they're selective about it, it would cause a lot of problems.
The movie was released, but it's behind a pretty expensive paywall at the moment, afaik. You can rent it for viewing by a group. I think they hope to have it in theaters in August.
