Bank for International Settlements or BIS Let's briefly explain what this financial institution actually is. eADV The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international organization headquartered in Basel, Switzerland.
It was founded in 1930 and is the oldest international financial institution. Although an international organization, the BIS is structured as a joint stock company, however, its shares can only be subscribed by central banks or designated financial institutions.
Currently 60 central banks, including the ECB, own shares in the BIS and are therefore represented at meetings of the General Meeting.
The main purpose of the organization is to promote cooperation among central banks. At the same time, the BIS provides specific financial services as a "bank of central banks" (i.e. it acts as a central bank for central banks around the world that are shareholders of the BIS) and acts as an agent or trustee in international payments entrusted to it.
