A kid was driving a little too fast this weekend and lost control of his car in front of our house and ditched it, destroying the body of the car and taking out our mailbox at the same time. He was not hurt, and his mom showed up quickly. They were both trying to right the mailbox and replace some of the rocks as we walked out to the accident scene.

We made sure no one was injured and the nearby neighbors all came out and pitched in getting the car moved off the main road until it could be towed, and picking up the pieces of undercarriage and bodywork strewn along the ditch. A couple helped route traffic. No one did any yelling or blaming or guilt-tripping. No police were called or involved.

After a couple hours everything was cleaned up. We told the mom we'd take care of the damaged mailbox and yard repair. The car was loaded onto the dad's flatbed truck and we all dispersed.

No one's insurance jacked up by traffic citations, no threats of litigation, no dogpiling on a youth for a youthful mistake.

Just neighbors helping neighbors and strangers through an unfortunate lesson in physics.

Felt like America.
