The Shanksville PA plane wasn't intended for a field in Shanksville PA. It was headed for the Capitol.

They wanted to take out the seats of power: economic (WTC), military (Pentagon), and govt (Capitol)

Interestingly (and fortunately), bin Laden had nixed the original plan of 10 planes, which would have included LA and the Sears Tower in Chicago, because of overly complicated logistics.
