I understand...I look like my Irish family, Auburn hair, pale skin, green eyes, so I don't really tan, my freckles run together! Kek!
Whether you keep them in pots or plant them, make sure you put about 10" or 12" of pine straw at the base to protect the roots. We also place a think clear plastic cover (think drop cloths) over plants in the ground & pots like a huge tent. We bought 25' x 35' ...the largest we could find and grouped the plants together with a thick cover of pine straw at the base of each one. It works well and the beauty of the clear plastic is the sun shines through during the day. My next goal is a green house!

We're on the Texas Coast so we usually only have several really cold, below freezing, days per year. Although we had a Massive Ice Storm on Valentine's Day several years ago and killed 10 of my Gardenia trees! They are not bushes, but rather like Topiaries. I only have 2 remaining.
My fruit trees are all in Yuge pots and are 5-6 ft tall. Forgot to mention I have an Olive tree also. My fig tree is the size is a 2 car garage and was planted by my Grandfather years ago. We also have a Pomegranate tree that he planted. We had a Persimmon tree but Hurricane RITA pushed it over and it didn't recover.
Wished we all lived closer but maybe we someday we can have a GAW Reunion!
