Yes if a brown recluse envenomates during a bite, the venom produces necrosis of the tissue - bad news as you found out.
My understanding is black widows are much more painful to be bitten by, but since their venon doesn't do this actually far less dangerous (unless baby or elderly and it actually kills you outright).
Edit: I knew a guy back in OK that got bit by a BR just below his knee. He almost had to have the leg amputated as infection got out of control. It was really close.
