What is a 'special master'?
Wikipedia: In the law of the United States, a special master is generally a subordinate official appointed by a judge to make sure that judicial orders are actually followed, or in the alternative, to hear evidence on behalf of the judge and make recommendations to the judge as to the disposition of a matter.
Better question is, who will be the special master? I don't think the DOJ will have a choice. Trump always gets what he wants.

Why would you need a special master when they already proved it was an illegal search and seizure? They took items out of scope from their warrant and they didn't catalog them in the evidence receipt. This case should be dead in the water.

To sift through the documents since some may be classified. It would be an ex judge or lawyer.
The judge should arrest the responsible for this crime.
Let's consider an interesting possibility.
If there was no legal basis for the invasion of Mar-a-Lago, then it was a crime.
The crime occured within the State of Florida, not within a federal territory.
Therefore, it comes under the legal jurisdiction of Florida, and not the United States.
The US corrupt system will claim that because federal agents were involved, it must be adjudicated within the federal courts, but that is not what the Constitution says.
Theoretically, Florida could appoint its own special master or investigative team, and if they determine a crime was committed, they could arrest the federal magistrate involved, and put him in a State jail, awaiting trial.
This would go to the US Supreme Court, where they just might side in favor of States' rights, and allow the prosecution in Florida.
Whether or not it would be a good idea politically, is another question.
But if it was a crime, it was a crime that occurred in Florida, under Florida jurisdiction.
There have been federal court cases over the years that claim that federal employees get special treatment in such cases. But that legal doctrine could be overturned by the US Supreme Court.
And wouldn't THAT change the game!
