Lost my next door neighbor - a NYC firefighter. Wife was involved, hurt. Lost another friend due to the search. Seems that many in the know somehow did not show up that day. Never forget.

I'll never forget that day. I watched it on TV. I had to work that afternoon, retail job at Kohl's while attending college. When I got there, it was somber. Seeing coworkers, I started crying and we were hugging. It was horrible. For the next week, at least, the store was empty, no customers in sight. Spooky almost. It was the one time in history, in my lifetime, that our country had come together and put our differences aside.🇺🇸❤

I pulled up my personal recollection of that day that I sent to former colleagues in the south: (yes, I can now be i.d.'d by people who know me, but I don't care)

I arrived at work shortly after 8am. It was probably the nicest day in the city since the Spring. It had rained the night before. A cold front had passed, producing a beautiful, clear, sunny morning. When the first jet crashed, we heard the explosion and felt our building slightly shake. No one knew what had happened. I asked if anyone thought it might be one of those rare NYC earthquakes, but we really thought it seemed more like a bomb had gone off. A few minutes later, we saw tons of what looked like confetti raining down a few blocks away, and then saw smoke. Our building is about 6 to 8 blocks from the WTC. Someone thought the debris was coming from a building construction site a few blocks away. The EPA building across the street from us blocks our view of the WTC, so we couldn't tell it was coming from there. Someone turned on a radio and we heard that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I immediately thought (you know my conspiratorilly oriented mind) that it seemed like it might be a terrorist action, since no pilot would hit a building. Even if a plane is having extreme mechanical problems, they steer away from buildings. We were able to turn on a TV and watch the coverage. The station we watched ran a long distance shot of the north tower burning. The camera was probably mounted on the Empire State Building. As we watched, we noticed a small flying object moving in from the right. I said that it looked like a news helicopter was approaching the scene and suggested that we change the channel to see if there was close-up video on another channel. Just a moment after I said that, we saw the object appear to fly between the two towers, and then we saw the ball of flame coming from the NE corner of the south tower. There was no doubt that it was terrorism at that moment, although someone thought that it was a news helicopter getting too close and crashing. I thought that it must have been a small plane loaded with explosives. Of course, what we saw was the second jet approaching from the south, and with the limited detail of the video coverage we were watching, it just appeared to be passing between the two towers and crashing into the NE corner of the south tower.

I was debating on leaving our building without any official order to evacuate. However, within a couple of minutes, we did receive the order. I grabbed my "daily provision bag" from my cubicle (usually contains breakfast, lunch, workout clothes, possibly folders from my office to take home or bring back from my home office, coffee mug, etc.) and headed down the stairwell with everyone else. We are on the 19th floor and there was orderly evacuation without much discussion on the way. Since the Oklahoma City bombing, all employees in Federal buildings are probably a little more aware of potential terrorist activity. I have recently learned that a man was apprehended at our building, sometime this summer, for taking photographs. He was released, but when the film was developed, it included pictures of security guard posts, video surveillance cameras, etc. Our office houses the regional FBI, so it is definitely of interest to terrorists. The thought of another plane heading toward our building was probably in most people's minds as we headed down the stairwell. Our building is one of the first highrises in lower Manhattan, with a mostly unobstructed view toward the north (meaning unobstructed flying toward our building from the north). There have been reports of other terrorist teams that possibly did not carry out other hijack missions. Our building is much smaller than the WTC towers. A jet crash into our building would possibly take it down outright!

As I left our building, I headed to the City Hall subway station, my usual station when I commute to work. As I neared the entrance, there is an open plaza area near City Hall. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people were standing and staring at the two towers on fire. It was an unbelievable site. It was more like a movie simulation than reality. (like one of the scenes from the movie Armageddon, where meteorites crashed through buildings in New York) Although I was concerned with the thought of additional planes striking the city, I stopped to stare for a couple of minutes. I saw a couple of the people that jumped rather than be burned alive. It was truly horrible. I then entered the subway station and caught a train that was not very crowded. Many people were walking north when I was on the street, probably assuming that the subways were not working (or fearing terrorist incidents in the subway?). At Grand Central Terminal, I boarded the next train back to Beacon, along with many other evacuees. While waiting to depart, we heard that the first tower had collapsed, then the other, along with news of the Pentagon being bombed. It was truly unbelievable. Everyone was in a state of shock. People were nervous about being in the tunnel system at Grand Central. As we left the city, the huge plumes of smoke and dust could be seen in the distance.

At home I watched the news coverage, still in disbelief. I pretty much watched the news for the next three days. I was called to help out with the Corps' emergency response efforts. This is usually associated with hurricanes and floods. The last time I helped with this was during hurricane Floyd, when portions of NJ were flooded. The Corps is assisting in the search and rescue, building assessment, and debris removal. My involvement during these activities is pretty much answering phones and taking messages.

I went into the city yesterday, via boat from our Caven Point field office in Jersey City, NJ, to retrieve files from my office. I had convinced them that I would be more beneficial to the Corps by doing my normal work, at home, rather than driving 90 minutes to NJ to answer phones. Many Corps employees have been instructed to just wait until our building is ready again before doing any work. The disaster cut phone and internet service to our building, so other locations are being used for temporary work sites.

The city was like a battle zone, with soldiers and police everywhere, and military helicopters flying overhead. Lots of people were walking around trying to get a look at the disaster scene. The smoke is still rising from the site. I didn't smell it because the wind was carrying it toward the west. I came in to a pier along the East River shore of lower Manhattan, by the Fulton Street fishmarket tourist area. Almost all of the businesses were still closed in the area (although a sign indicated that they would be back up on Wednesday). The disaster site looks like a single bomb went off (based on photos some of the Corps people who toured the area showed me). There are pieces of the towers stuck in the sides of buildings several hundred yards away. You can't see much from the areas the public are allowed to walk by. When I got back on the boat to head back to NJ, we traveled around the southern tip of Manhattan to pick up someone just north of the WTC. From the water I could see some of the edges of buildings damaged during the collapse, but could not see the full extent of the damage.

I think that flying in jets is probably safer now than it ever was. I am more worried about truck bombs and things like that. If the terrorists had done truck bombings at the same time as the plane crashes, it would have produced devastation beyond the unbelief produced by the two planes.

As big a pain as the hurricanes in NC were, I'll take them over terrorist incidents any day.

This incident has certainly unified the country, and made most people think about what is important in life. When I got home that day, I went with (my wife) to get our kids out of school, not so much because I thought they were in any danger (although incidents like this often cause mentally unstable people to do things), but because I just wanted to have them home with me.

All New York District employees were accounted for after the incident, with on one killed or injured. The NY District works closely with Port Authority personnel on some of the dredging projects, and some of our employees could have been there, as they were just a few weeks ago, for a meeting. I brought our family there about a month ago to go up to the observation deck.

There are so many stories I have heard of people that just happened to be late that day, and so were spared the ordeal. There are other stories of people that wouldn't normally be there, but were because of some meeting or other reason. There were apparently a lot of breakfast meetings at the restaurant at the top of one of the towers that day. I don't know how many people made it down from the top 20 floors. It apparently takes about 45 minutes to walk down from the top.

That's about it _____ feel free to forward this or put it out in the ___ lobby. I still haven't come to terms with the thought of someone purposely murdering over 5000 people. I have never been to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington. However, there is a sort of miniature version of it, called the "moving wall" I believe, that is transported around the country and set up for people to see. It was set up in Morehead City a few years ago by the hospital. I walked over to look at it. Although I did not personally know anyone who died in Vietnam, when I saw the row after row after row of names of the people who died, it brought tears to my eyes. Perhaps this WTC incident will really hit me when I see a list of the names of all those people. Relatives and friends of victims have been posting missing posters all over lower Manhattan, not unlike the posters you see when a family loses a pet. Most of the photos were taken at some special, happy occasion. When you see the posters, you get a real sense of the loss resulting from this incident. There are probably only a few hundred of these posters that have been put up. To think that over 5000 people were killed is too hard to deal with.

I will never forget that day. I lived in upstate NY supposedly where one of the planes followed down the river to the City. It was such a glorious, beautiful clear blue sky day that day. One where you were glad to be alive. Within hours I went from a big high to total grief. My child was locked into her high school and they wouldn't let her out. I was so distraught over not being able to get her home. She was finally released but not until almost 4 pm.

My brother in law worked in the Pentagon and at one time his office was in the area that was hit. He was there that day. My sister was unsure if that was where his office was. He normally carpooled to work so he had no car there. He is a former Marine who survived VietNam and lost many buddies over there. He named his first son after his best buddy that died in Nam. He had a cell phone but no cells worked that day so he couldn't call home. My sister never heard from him until almost 9 pm. She was anxiously awaiting word as were all of us family members. After the hit on the Pentagon, he stayed to see if he could help out. And his carpool home was cancelled. He eventually hitched a ride home getting in after 11 pm. They live in No. Va.

I didn't lose anyone that day but I knew others who did or who had relatives who did. It was a sad day for sure. One none of us who lived through it will ever forget.

My sister and her husband were supposed to be on that flight that left Boston, but, they decided to go a day earlier to do some downtime in San Fransisco , as it was a business trip. I cannot imagine how much "collateral damage" all over the world happens on a daily basis, as the powers that be do their constant damage, all for power, all for money, all for dark deals. Christ have mercy on the innocents who get caught up in the global machinations that seem never ending. I clearly remember the "opening act" of the Republican Convention that year, it opened with a big screen showing tanks, bombers, warships, etc, and I thought to myself wtf? They went on and on and on about a strong military, how the fight for Democracy must be fortified and supported, Cheney had a plan, called "Full Spectrum Domination." But, we were at peace, and a pre emptive strike would not have gone well with the population, was it Bush that said "we would need another Pearl Harbor?" or was it the lizard Condi Rice? Well they managed to orchestrate their Pearl Harbor, and then went after Saddam with some lies about yellow cake uranium. And they got their war. Collateral damage on both sides, children, families, young men all pumped up because of the attack to go and fight. It was orchestrated, as all wars are.

I wonder what Boy wonder was doing? Bean dip.

Did have job interview in North Tower at 9:00 AM. Had to change it to 2:30 PM later that day. My GA was watching over me.

I lost 13 that day. 8 at Cantor Fitzgerald. Two who jumped. My blood boils at the sight of the Bush clan

It's hard to believe that planes could have done the damage to the towers & pentagon to make them fall, and it appeared to be explosions not planes taking down the buildings.

What happened to the people & planes that were said to have hit the towers & pentagon? Did they crash the planes somewhere that no one would see, then clean it up?
