Why is the SAT useless? We need a national standard to benchmark students with. It tests fundamental skills required in higher education like math and English. A 4.0 GPA in the inner city isn't equivalent to a 4.0 GPA in a private school and a standardized test can show that.
Brother, if you're going for a math degree, yes, you will learn abstract math that might be useless. Classes like calculus and statistics are absolutely crucial to know for a wide range of applications, especially in STEM. I would start with removing bullshit degrees like gender studies. Math, language, and computer skills are absolutely critical to the success of our nation. Those fancy hypersonic missiles we have? It was the nerds that made it.
I agree, we should pay our trade workers more and have more trade schools. We need more STEM schools though too. The world is becoming more technological not less, and unfortunately, a welder isn't going to be able to help when foreign nations initiate cyber warfare. It is the STEM students of tomorrow that will inevitably create the machines/A.I that revolutionize the world.
As for an overhaul, a classical education (Socratic vs didactic) will produce geniuses.

It’s useless because knowledge isn’t static.
How do AI computers work? They work by failing 1000s of times and adjusting from each failure.
You do need it to be able to control supply and demand of schools. Meaning they do not have enough spots to accept everyone.
that’s all it’s good for.
