Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Am I the only one that thinks adult Legos are ridiculous? It's like opiate for the masses. Like pickle ball. Just dumb shit down till everyone can do it.
Adults used to build "models" which is a fucking skill - the aviation museum in OKC (same building as the Omniplex) had* quite the (I think) donated collection of very well-done ones.
Edit: *back in the day - I moved out of OK late 90s. I wonder if the Omniplex is still what it was, if it's still there, or if it went all woke. I hope not, it was really the best science/tech museum I've been to by a lot actually - the one in Denver is pretty disappointing for example. (The one in Phoenix, at the time I lived there - right after OK - was pretty good but not Omniplex level.)
Go to a LEGO show or search for LEGO on the web. There are some massively good mocs, AKA creations, done in LEGO. A good place to start is with Eurobricks as the front page is filled with those models. There are a ton of very talented people in the community.
If people are actually creating things still, great, I'll retract this partially. Many are just buying kits to build Star Wars crap or whatever - those are the ones I'm eye-rolling hard about.
Building LEGO models isn't any different than building models of cars, planes, and ships. This includes the Star Wars crap because I have seen Revell release models of Star Wars crap. Blame George Lucas for signing the licensing deals in the first place.
BS on that. Even gluing the damn things together (I was never a master as a kid) takes some skill, then actually painting/finishing them etc so they look real and not just the decals stuck on is where the real art comes in (I just stuck the decals on)(my one trick was powdered graphite streaks so the guns looked fired LOL).
HUGE difference from something that you just follow the instructions putting the pieces together till done.
