I'd say more than half of YouTube ads I'm served are for scams, whether financial get-rich-quick schemes or products that can't possibly do what the ads claim. So advertisers will make a lot of profit on that 0.01% conversion rate. I don't even look at Google ads, so he might be right about that.
Interestingly, I use UBlock Origin, and YT for a time relatively recently would say "using an adblocker violated our terms of service." Most videos I watch are music uploads or whatever without ads anyway, so I said fine and turned it off for the page. Well the ads started to get annoying (not so bad if at beginning, super annoying when the video just stops) so I figured "I wonder if UBO has gotten out ahead of this" and turned it back on - well either they did or YT gave up as I haven't seen that warning/block on videos since....
uBlock Origin does a pretty good job of keeping up with the ad-block-blocker tech. I started using Brave browser on my mobile devices, that works perfect too.
