Went to make a deposit to First Citizens Bank two days ago. The amount was less than $500. The tell asked for my ID. I got pretty loud and asked what she needed it for. She stated they are now required to document every single cash deposit.

I think they’re trying to stop anonymous crypto type transactions.
There are some folks who will give out bank account numbers and if you deposit into their account with a memo of your crypto wallet id, they’ll take a cut but put most of your money into your wallet.
That way your deposit is anonymous into your anonymous wallet. It’s really untraceable.

I am actually curious about people who do go into the bank nowadays. I haven't needed to speak to a teller in ages ( i think I was closing on my house and needed a cashier's check). What's going on in there?

Because they changed ALL the outside tellers to automatic ATMs. I like having cash on hand and to cash my check takes 10 more steps than just waking in and cashing it with a human. I found out quickly how much I hate the new installs lol

I withdraw 1000-1400 every month with zero issues. They never ask why (they shouldn’t) and they just do what I ask.

Same thing happened to me a few days ago…first time! I went to put 300 in my wife’s credit Union. They wanted last four of phone, ss, and date of birth. I said I’m just making a deposit! She said they have to have info. It was weird to me.
Big city or small town? Maybe that makes a difference. In Mayberry towns the tellers already know you…but for $500 seems strange still for a deposit even if they don’t know you. They’ll get pretty wound up about $10,000 or more though. If I had $10,000 to deposit I would buy gold coins and buy a good safe.
I use a paycard from work, will be switching over to another kind of prepaid card for direct deposit/online purchases when this one expires. I haven't done banks for a few years now

I was told I could not make a cash deposit into my son's account the other day! Since it was not my own account, cash couldn't go in - only checks. Now that seemed backward to me!

I was thinking actually, go in with a stack of 1's and make them deposit each of them separately to show them they need quit listening to the government and run their business for the customers.

I'm not sure if that is true elsewhere but it must be a slow day at that bank. With all the cash floating around, waiting for people to dig out their ID's is nuts. I guess it will be against the law soon to sell an old lawn mower at a yard sale where the buyer gives you $100 in cash and you try to deposit it? Next time go to the drive through window. Give them the cash with completed deposit slip.

You have a credit card through them? If so, it might be to adjust your credit limit up/down to better match take home pay, and potentially reduce credit risk for themselves.

I just spent 3 weeks taking care of my elderly mother with what appears to be moderate dementia. My dad gave me a check for 250 to have cash on my way home in case of emergencies, anyway I took the check to PNC and they needed my license and a major credit card to cash it as well as taking a 2% fee cause I don’t bank there…, it was ridiculous really the more I think about it…
